In North America, ARES (Amateur Radio Disaster Services,Amateur Radio Emergency Service) provides organisation and training for amateur radio volunteers to ensure readiness in time of disaster or civil emergency. ARES volunteers may also provide communications for large public events. Groups are normally organised on a local, county or regional basis. While the ARES name is trademarked for use by American Radio Relay League-backed groups in the US and by RAC member groups in Canada, similar emergency communication groups do serve similar roles under different names in various nations worldwide.
