In North America, ARES (Amateur Radio Disaster Services, Amateur Radio Emergency Service) provides organization and training for amateur radio volunteers to ensure readiness in times of disaster or civil emergency, Such as proper use of emergency radios.
ARES volunteers may also provide communications for large public events. Groups are normally organized on a local, county or regional basis.
While the ARES name is trademarked for use by ham Radio Relay League-backed groups in the US and by RAC member groups in Canada, similar emergency communication groups do serve similar roles under different names in various nations worldwide.
