A sky wave is a radio wave that travels farther than line of sight (that would be a ground wave). It uses the ionosphere to bounce around the earth to reach its final destination. Using HF but also sometimes higher frequencies, HAM operators regularly make contact accross oceans and continents, and sometimes completely around the earth. This is called making DX (distant) contacts.
